What’s Inside a Modern Ketubah
Attending a Jewish wedding involves a traditional custom which is the Ketubah or also known for being called as the Jewish marriage contract. Ketubah should be signed by the wedding couples in front of the rabbi and their witnesses because this is part of their wedding ceremony. At present, there is already what you call a modern Ketubah which is created and used during a wedding ceremony by couples that don’t really go for traditional ceremonies, or those that are not very religious, those that are considered interfaith couples or those who belong to the gay community.
This Ketubah or Ketubot in plural term, is a written version of the vows, promises and responsibilities for a newlywed couple. A Ketubah is an artistically framed document that is basically seen on the walls of the couple’s home to serve as a reminder for both of them on what love is all about. Aside from that, a modern Ketubah can also serve as a pre-nuptial agreement. There are still people who prefer to have a pre-nuptial agreement first and these are often those who have failed in their first marriage and just want to make sure of their futures when they marry again.
There are lots of ways in making ketubahs that you can experiment on but you can follow these various steps for you to have your own modern ketubah on your upcoming Jewish wedding:
The first thing that you need to do to start your Ketubah is to know what type of design, artwork and text you would like to have that will best fit you and your partner. Rabbis can also help you out on the creation of your Ketubah since they have been witnessing a lot of ketubah during weddings and this is not new to them at all. Hiring a mediator to help you out in putting up the agreement is also a very wise thing to do. They are the ones who can help you to understand the needs and wants of you and your partner.
In order to protect the welfare of the children and the wife, this agreement has been created and this is one of the traditional reasons why it was created. Ketubah is also considered a guarantor for the mother and children to be financially supported despite the possibilities of divorce or separation of the couple.
Married couples will be more comfortable writing their vows in a Ketubah text. When writing the content, it should be felt and coming from the heart to further understand the wedding. You need to write down everything because this is your way of showing your partner how you love him or her and that you will promise not to hurt the person and love him unconditionally and follow the rules of marriage.
